Magnetic Cleaner vs Blade Scraper vs Melamine Pad: The Definitive Glass Cleaning Test
I cleaned the same tank three different ways over three months to find out which glass cleaning tool actually earns a permanent spot on your maintenance shelf. Not theory. Not marketing copy. Actual side-by-side results on real algae, on real glass, with the scratches to prove what works and what lies about working. If you have ever stood in a fish store aisle wondering whether to buy the $40 magnetic cleaner or the $3 pack of melamine foam, this is the article that saves you the guessing.
The Test Setup
The test tank: a 40-gallon breeder with standard float glass, moderate lighting at 50 PAR, and a deliberate lack of algae crew. No nerite snails, no otocinclus, no amano shrimp. The tank grew algae freely for the full test period so each cleaning tool faced the same conditions.
The five algae types that developed naturally:
- Green dust algae: Soft, powdery green film that appears within days of cleaning
- Green spot algae: Hard, calcified green dots that bond to glass like concrete
- Brown diatoms: Soft brown film common in newer tanks and low-light setups
- Green beard algae: Short fuzzy tufts growing from the glass surface near the waterline
- Biofilm: The clear-to-white organic film that develops on all submerged surfaces

You flip between them by rotating the inside magnet. The unit floats if it detaches from the glass, which prevents it from landing in the sand and picking up scratch-causing debris.
Performance by Algae Type
- Green dust algae: Removed completely in a single pass with the scrubber pad. This is what magnetic cleaners are designed for.
- Green spot algae: The scrubber pad smeared it around without removing it. Flipping to the blade side removed green spot in 2 to 3 passes per area, effective but slower than a dedicated hand scraper.
- Brown diatoms: Removed instantly with the pad. Diatoms are soft enough that almost anything removes them.
- Green beard algae: The pad knocked down the tufts but left the base attached. The blade was more effective, shaving the algae off the glass surface.
- Biofilm: Removed easily with the pad.

For weekly maintenance cleaning, nothing is faster. You can clean during feeding, during water changes, or while watching TV, just move the outer magnet.
Round 2: Stainless Steel Blade Scraper
A long-handled scraper with replaceable stainless steel razor blades. No electronics, no magnets, no moving parts. Just a sharp edge and elbow grease.
Performance by Algae Type
- Green dust algae: Overkill. The blade removes it instantly but this is like using a chainsaw to trim a hedge.
- Green spot algae: Removed in a single pass. The blade shaves green spot off glass like it was never there. This is where blade scrapers earn their reputation, nothing else removes established green spot this efficiently.
- Brown diatoms: Single pass, gone. Again, overkill for soft algae.
- Green beard algae: Shaved clean in one pass. The blade removes everything down to bare glass.
- Biofilm: Removed completely.
Convenience Score
Moderate. You need to put your hand in the tank. You need to maintain the correct blade angle (30 to 45 degrees) throughout the stroke or you risk scratching the glass. You need to avoid the silicone seams entirely, the blade cuts through silicone if you scrape over it. And you need to replace blades when they develop nicks or dull edges, because a damaged blade scratches glass.
Round 3: Melamine Foam Pad
Plain white melamine foam, the same material used in household cleaning pads, cut into aquarium-sized pieces. No chemicals added, no fragrances, just micro-abrasive foam that dissolves as you scrub.
Performance by Algae Type
- Green dust algae: Removed in 2 to 3 passes with moderate pressure. Slightly more effort than the magnetic cleaner but fully effective.
- Green spot algae: Removed with firm pressure and 4 to 6 passes per area. Slower than a blade scraper but it does work. The melamine abrasive grinds through the calcified algae rather than shearing it off.
- Brown diatoms: Removed with minimal effort in a single pass.
- Green beard algae: Removed the tufts effectively with moderate scrubbing. Not as clean as a blade pass but acceptable.
- Biofilm: Removed easily.
Convenience Score
Your hand goes in the tank. The foam disintegrates as you scrub, leaving tiny white particles that float around before settling, harmless to fish but visually messy for a few hours. You go through foam quickly on heavy algae. But the foam conforms to any surface shape, making it ideal for cleaning curved tank corners, equipment surfaces, and hardscape in addition to flat glass panels.
The Scratch Test Results
After three months of testing:
- Magnetic cleaner: Two scratches, both from trapped sand grains after the intentional drop test. Zero scratches when the pad was inspected before each use.
- Blade scraper: Zero scratches on glass when used at the correct angle with a sharp blade. One scratch caused by a deliberately nicked blade to confirm the risk.
- Melamine pad: Zero scratches on glass. Micro-abrasions visible under magnification on acrylic after heavy scrubbing, but invisible to the naked eye under normal lighting.
What About Nerite Snails
The biological glass cleaning option deserves mention. A single nerite snail covers approximately 20 to 30 square inches of glass per day, constantly grazing green dust algae, diatoms, and biofilm. They do not replace manual cleaning, nerite snails cannot remove green spot algae, but they dramatically reduce how often you need to pick up a tool. A tank with 2 to 3 nerite snails per 20 gallons stays noticeably cleaner between manual cleaning sessions.
