Aquarium Heater Sizing: The Wattage Math That Keeps Fish Alive
An aquarium heater is the piece of equipment you never think about until it fails, and when it fails, you find dead fish. Heaters are simultaneously the most boring and most critical piece of aquarium equipment. Nobody gets excited about buying a heater. But the wrong heater, sized incorrectly or positioned poorly, silently creates the conditions for a tank crash that wipes out everything you have built.
The Basic Wattage Rule
The standard guideline: 3 to 5 watts per gallon. A 20-gallon tank needs a 60 to 100 watt heater. A 55-gallon tank needs 165 to 275 watts. This rule works for most situations where the room temperature is reasonably close to your target tank temperature (within 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit).
But this rule is a starting point, not gospel. Your actual heating needs depend on the temperature difference between the room and your target tank temperature, the tank's surface area (more surface = more heat loss), and whether you have a lid (open-top tanks lose heat dramatically faster).

The most common type. A glass tube containing a heating element and thermostat, fully submerged in the tank. Brands like Eheim Jager and Fluval M-series are reliable workhorses that have heated millions of tanks without incident.
The main risk is physical damage, a glass heater can crack if it contacts cold water while hot (during a water change, for instance) or if struck by a falling piece of hardscape. Always unplug glass heaters 10 minutes before water changes to let them cool.
Titanium Heaters
A titanium heating element paired with an external temperature controller. More expensive ($40-80) but virtually indestructible compared to glass. The external controller provides more precise temperature regulation and typically includes high-temperature safety cutoffs.
Inline Heaters
Installed in the canister filter return line, heating water as it flows back to the tank. Completely invisible, nothing inside the tank at all. The ultimate choice for aquascapers who want zero visible equipment. Hydor and Ista make popular inline models.
Preset vs. Adjustable
Preset heaters (fixed at 78 F) are cheaper but inflexible. If you keep tropical fish that thrive at 78 F, they work fine. But if you need 74 F for white cloud minnows or 82 F for discus, you need an adjustable heater. Always buy adjustable, the $5 savings on a preset heater is not worth the limitation.
Heater Placement
Where you put the heater matters more than most people realize. Poor placement creates temperature gradients where one side of the tank is warmer than the other, stressing fish that swim between zones.
Optimal Placement
- Near the filter intake or output where water flow distributes heated water
- Horizontal or at a 45-degree angle rather than vertical (more even heating)
- At least 1 inch from any glass surface (prevents hot spots)
- If using two heaters, place them on opposite ends of the tank

Seasonal Considerations
If your home temperature fluctuates seasonally, cold in winter, warm in summer, your heater works harder during cold months. Check that your heater can handle the worst-case scenario (coldest room temperature) rather than the average.
In summer, some fish rooms get too warm. If your tank regularly exceeds 82 F during heat waves, a small clip-on fan blowing across the water surface provides evaporative cooling of 3 to 5 degrees. Better than a chiller at a fraction of the cost.
