Managing pH in Your Planted Aquarium

pH in a planted aquarium is mostly a symptom, not something to chase directly. Most aquascaping plants and common community fish are comfortable across a broad band from roughly 6.5 to 7.5, and stability matters far more than hitting a specific number. Before adjusting anything, it helps to know what actually moves pH in a planted tank.

What Actually Sets Your pH

Two things dominate. Carbonate hardness, measured as KH, is the water's buffer: a high KH holds pH steady and high, a low KH lets it drift and fall. And CO2 behaves as a weak acid in water, so injecting it for the plants naturally pulls pH down through the day and lets it rise again overnight as the gas comes back off. That daily swing on a CO2 tank is normal and not something to correct.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: A drop of about one pH point from CO2 corresponds to roughly a threefold rise in dissolved CO2, which is why the pH-and-KH pairing is the classic way aquascapers estimate their CO2 level.

Lowering pH the Natural Way

Active aquasoils such as ADA Amazonia or UNS Controsoil pull pH down into the low-to-mid sixes and hold it there for a year or more, which is why high-tech scapes are built on them. Botanical tannins from driftwood, Indian almond leaves, or a bag of peat in the filter also acidify the water gently and tint it slightly amber. These methods are slow and forgiving; they shift pH over days, not minutes.

Raising pH, and What Not to Do

To lift or steady a pH that drifts too low, add carbonate hardness with crushed coral, aragonite, or a commercial KH buffer, which props the buffer back up. What to avoid is chasing pH with bottled "pH up" and "pH down" liquids: they fight against your KH, swing the tank back and forth, and stress fish far more than a slightly off but stable pH ever would.

The Bottom Line

Measure your KH and let it explain why your pH sits where it does. Choose the substrate and hardscape for the pH you want, dose CO2 for the plants, and otherwise leave pH alone. Fish adapt to a stable value; what they cannot cope with is one that lurches.
