Spring Pond Startup: Your Complete Reopening Checklist

Spring pond startup is the most important maintenance event of the year. The decisions you make during the first two weeks of reopening determine water quality, fish health, and plant performance for the entire growing season. Rush it and you pay with algae blooms, sick fish, and months of corrective effort. Take it methodically and you set the stage for a beautiful, trouble-free season.

When to Start

Begin spring startup when daytime water temperatures consistently reach 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This varies by region β€” late February in the South, March to April in the mid-Atlantic, April to May in the northern states. Water temperature, not air temperature, is the trigger.

Temperature check: Use a pond thermometer placed in the deepest zone. Wait until it reads 50 degrees for three consecutive days before starting the reopening process.

The Startup Sequence

Week 1: Assessment and Equipment

  1. Visual assessment: Examine the pond condition β€” water clarity, debris level, fish activity, and any winter damage to edges, liner, or structures
  2. Remove winter equipment: Take out the de-icer and winter aerator. Remove any netting or covers.
  3. Reinstall the pump: If you removed the pump for winter, reinstall it in the skimmer. Check the impeller for debris and ensure the check valve is clean.
  4. Start the pump: Run the system and observe water flow through the entire circuit β€” skimmer to biofalls to waterfall.
  5. Reinstall the UV clarifier: Install a fresh UV bulb if the old one has more than 12 months of use. UV output degrades over time even when the bulb still lights.
  6. Test water quality: Full parameter test β€” ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, pH, KH.

Week 2: Biology and Feeding

  1. Add beneficial bacteria: Double-dose concentrated bacteria to jump-start the biological filter. The bacterial colonies that survived winter are depleted and need reinforcement.
  2. Begin feeding cautiously: When water temperature holds above 50 degrees, start feeding wheat germ-based cold water food once daily. Feed only what fish consume in 3 minutes.
  3. Clean the skimmer: Remove accumulated winter debris from the basket and mat.
  4. Light biological filter cleaning: Gently rinse (not scrub) the biofalls filter mats with pond water. Aggressive cleaning destroys beneficial bacteria you are trying to establish.
Do not deep-clean the biofilter in spring. The bacteria colonies on filter media survived winter dormancy and are your best asset for quick startup. A gentle rinse removes sludge without destroying the bacterial film.

Weeks 3-4: Plants and Fine-Tuning

  1. Assess plants: Trim dead foliage from hardy marginals. Remove any plants that did not survive winter.
  2. Fertilize water lilies: Push aquatic fertilizer tabs into lily baskets to fuel spring growth.
  3. Divide overgrown plants: Early spring is the ideal time to divide iris, pickerel rush, and other marginals that have outgrown their containers.
  4. Add new plants: Introduce floating plants (water lettuce, water hyacinth) once water temperature exceeds 65 degrees.
  5. Continue bacteria dosing: Weekly doses through the first month establish robust filtration.
Patience with feeding: Gradually increase feeding frequency and volume as water temperature rises. By the time water reaches 70 degrees, transition to standard warm-water food and feed 2 to 3 times daily.

Common Spring Problems

Spring Algae Bloom

Green water in spring is nearly universal. Sunlight increases before plant growth catches up and before bacteria colonies mature. The bloom typically resolves within 4 to 6 weeks as the biological filter establishes and plants shade the surface. See our green water fix guide.

Fish Illness After Winter

Fish immune systems are suppressed during winter dormancy. As they reactivate in spring, they are vulnerable to parasites and bacterial infections. Watch for flashing, lethargy, and visible lesions. Treat proactively with salt (1 pound per 100 gallons) to boost immune function.

Spring Startup Checklist Summary

  • Water temperature check (50 degrees for 3 days)
  • Remove winter equipment
  • Reinstall and test pump
  • Replace UV bulb if needed
  • Full water test
  • Double-dose beneficial bacteria
  • Begin cold-water feeding
  • Clean skimmer, gentle rinse biofilter
  • Trim and fertilize plants
  • Monitor fish health daily for 2 weeks
