Which LED Lights Actually Work for Planted Aquariums? A Practical Breakdown

Aquarium lighting is the one equipment category where marketing claims and actual performance diverge the most. Every LED fixture promises "full spectrum" and "plant growth" on the box, but point a PAR meter at them and the results range from genuinely excellent to barely adequate for a fish-only tank. The gap between what works and what wastes your money is wider than most hobbyists realize.

How to Choose: A Decision Framework

- Are you running CO2? No → budget tier is perfectly adequate. Yes → mid-range minimum, premium if you can afford it.
- What plants are you growing? Low-demand (Anubias, Java fern, Crypts) → any tier works. High-demand (carpets, reds) → mid-range or premium.

Photoperiod: How Long to Run Your Lights
Duration matters as much as intensity. Here are proven photoperiod guidelines:
- New tanks (first 4 weeks): 5 to 6 hours. Short photoperiods starve algae while plants establish roots.
- Low-tech tanks: 6 to 7 hours. Longer periods do not help plants without CO2, they just grow algae.
- High-tech tanks with CO2: 8 to 10 hours. CO2 injection starts 1 hour before lights on and stops 1 hour before lights off for optimal efficiency.
- Siesta schedule (optional): Split the photoperiod into two blocks (4 hours on, 3 hours off, 4 hours on). Some hobbyists report reduced algae with this approach, though scientific evidence is limited.
