Natural Swimming Ponds: Swimming Without Chemicals

Natural swimming ponds (NSPs) combine the recreational function of a swimming pool with the biological beauty of an ecosystem pond, using plants and gravel filtration instead of chemicals to maintain safe, clear water.
How Natural Swimming Ponds Work
Every NSP is divided into two zones: a swimming zone (deep, plant-free area for recreation) and a regeneration zone (shallow, densely planted area that filters the water). Water circulates continuously from the swimming zone through the regeneration zone and back. Aquatic plants, gravel beds, and beneficial bacteria in the regeneration zone remove nutrients, pathogens, and organic matter β achieving water quality that meets or exceeds swimming pool standards.
Design Principles
Zone Ratio
The regeneration zone must equal or exceed the swimming zone in surface area. A 50/50 split is minimum β 60 percent regeneration to 40 percent swimming is even better for water quality. This means an NSP that provides the same swimming area as a 20x40-foot pool needs a total footprint of at least 40x40 feet.
Separation Methods
The swimming and regeneration zones can be separated by:
- A low wall just below the water surface (water flows over the top)
- A gravel berm planted with marginals
- A completely separate adjacent basin connected by plumbing
Depth
Swimming zones are typically 6 to 8 feet deep β similar to a pool deep end. Regeneration zones are shallow: 8 to 24 inches for optimal plant growth and biological activity.
Water Quality
Properly designed NSPs achieve remarkable water clarity β visibility of 10+ feet is normal. The biological filtration controls bacteria, removes nutrients, and prevents algae. Water testing protocols similar to pool testing (but measuring different parameters) ensure safety.

- Traditional chlorine pool: $30,000 to $70,000 installed
- Natural swimming pond: $50,000 to $150,000+ installed
- Annual pool chemicals: $500 to $1,500/year
- Annual NSP maintenance: $200 to $800/year (plant care, pump service)
